After travelling around Australia, I became interested in the way towns use sculpture to welcome people. I wanted to create something that could do the same for my school.\u003cbr\u003eMaking it was a lot more challenging than I expected, but that was also what I enjoyed about it. I spent more than 100 hours bending, forging, welding and shaping steel and copper. Things went wrong. Some of my structural welds would snap, so I had to persevere. Although the scene is filled with shadow, the warm glow of the lamp suggests comfort, resilience and the possibility of brighter moments ahead.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe painting was inspired by Laufey’s Silver Lining music video and its themes of comfort, love and acceptance despite imperfection. I was drawn to the emotional atmosphere of the scene and wanted to reinterpret it in my own way.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eUsing acrylic paint, I built layered tones over a rose-coloured underpainting to create depth, contrast and realism. The reflective satin dress became a technical focus, allowing me to explore light, surface and silvery highlights. I filled the anatomical lung with discarded cigarette packets I collected from the streets. Each packet was once owned by someone, used and then thrown away, but the residue of that experience can remain in the body long after the packet itself has disappeared. The work began with a tobacco tin that belonged to my grandfather, a Dutch artist who died from cancer. This made me think about how ordinary objects can carry personal histories and connections between generations. I became interested in the different designs, languages and branding on the packets I collected, and what they might represent about the people who once owned them. Placing the packets inside the lungs changes how they are seen. I was interested in the idea of masculinity and the pressure men can feel to appear strong, even when they are struggling. I used the clown as a way of showing this contrast between what someone presents to other people and what they might actually be feeling. I was also thinking about the history of racist caricatures of Black people, where exaggerated faces and characters were used for entertainment. This made me think about how a person can be turned into a character or stereotype instead of being seen as an individual. I wanted the figure in the painting to feel uncomfortable and vulnerable rather than like a traditional clown. Each print from the wider Decussation series announces its difference through texture, rolling patterns and subtle creased idiosyncrasies that change slightly with each pull. The plastic matrix has been forcibly changed from smooth to textured, then back to flat again in its final represented form, which has then been multiplied to intersect with its different representations across space and time.
