About the work

Pod 2 is a study in the relationship between organic growth and human made structures. Carved from reclaimed timber and combined with mild steel, the sculpture takes its form from the enclosed structures found throughout the natural world: seed pods, shells, nests and other vessels for new life. The scorched and worked surface of the timber retains evidence of its transformation, while the steel introduces a contrasting sense of rigidity and permanence. The work sits between natural object and constructed form, suggesting something ancient and manufactured, simultaneously. Rather than reproducing a specific botanical form, the Pod 2 series distils the idea of a vessel or capsule into a simple, sculptural object.
