What Grows Through the Cracks

About the work

This artwork is about me and the things I have been through that have left cracks in me. I used to think that being cracked meant being broken, and that the broken parts of me were things I needed to hide. While making this, I started thinking about how flowers can grow through cracks in pavements. The pavement is damaged, but the crack gives something beautiful a place to grow.

I made the outside of the head dark and cracked to represent the difficult parts of my life and the things that have hurt me. Inside, I placed small colourful objects to represent the memories, experiences and parts of myself that have grown from those cracks.

I want people to look closely and realise that being cracked doesn't mean you can't grow something beautiful. Sometimes, the most beautiful things grow from the places that have hurt the most.
